Edward Badlam, Jr. was born is Chester, Vermont, in 1809. He trained in the art of making pianotfortes in Boston during the early 1830's. By 1841, Badlam had begun making pianofortes in Potsdam. He soon became a partner of Benjamin Batchelder, a local furniture manufacurer.
