Licoln Assassination

The Potsdam Methodist Church held a Union meeting following the assassination in late April 1865. The number in attendance at the religious service was large, the Church was appropriately decorated with black, and the American flag, also draped in black, was hung in the Church.

Part of the hymn commencing "Oh God Our Help in Ages Past" were sung and prayer was offered by Rev. Gardner Baker of Watertown and by Rev. F. F. Jewll of Adams. Several Scripture lessons were read by Rev. Mr. Riggs, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The hymn commencing "Dread Jehovah God of Nations" was then sung. Bishop Kingsley of Cleveland, Ohio, the president of the Methodist Conference, made a very appropriate and effective address. Eloquent addresses were also made by Rev. J. C. Vendercook of Fulton and Rev. James Erwin of Rome.

Concluding prayer was offered by Rev. Mr. Sawyer, pastor of the Baptist Church in this village. After a voluntary from the choir, he Benediction was pronounced by Rev. I. L. Hunt of Adams.
